What is Science Baby?
Science Baby is creative science playshops for infants to 3 years. The heart of Science Baby is exploring the wonder of science through story, repetition and play. We explore gravity, motion, magnets, chemical reactions, light, water, bubbles, sound and more.
What happens at a playshop?
A playshop is a 30-45 minute class that centers around an original picture book based on a scientific theme. Each playshop begins with free play followed by our welcome songs and story time. We follow the story then a puppet friend joins us to share the simple STEM vocab of the day. Big concepts broken down in to small ideas and words. Then we explore these concepts hands-on. The unique curriculum is specifically tailored to the young developing mind with a focus on embedded learning. This provides children the opportunity to revisit and rediscover the science and class routines through story and play. Science Baby is family-centered learning with parents and caregivers present and engaged with their little scientists.
Emma Gordon
Creator & Lead Teaching Artist
Emma Gordon is an artist, performer and educator. She's been a teaching artist in NYC public schools for 12 years, working with Wingspan Arts to create & lead arts-infused creative science curriculum for in-school residencies and after-school programs. The Art of Science, a creative science class for grades K-5 and Toymaker’s Workshop, a creative engineering class for grades 3-5 are both still taught in after-school programs around New York City. A proud graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York, Emma has performed on stages big and small, worked in both TV and film. She has lent her voice to such campaigns as Marriott, Phillips, The Outback Steakhouse and the animated educational website Curiosityville as Ruby the Cat. Emma is a storyteller, most recently traveling across America for The Moth MainStage. Her story has also appeared in the Washington Post, Huffington Post and The Moth's most recent anthology "Occasional Magic". A self-taught illustrator she has polished her skills over the years studying at the Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Emma lives with her husband and two kids in Queens, NY.
Camilla Gordon, PhD
Early Childhood Curriculum Advisor
Camilla’s career spans over 40 years in early childhood education and she is a passionate specialist in early childhood science. She is a lecturer in science, birth to five years, at Sydney and Wollongong Universities and at the Institute of Early Childhood at Macquarie University, where she completed her PhD on learning astronomy in preschool. She is the founder of the Young Starwatcher Programme: Astronomy workshops for children and their families, now in its 18th year. For the past 6 years, and now as an Associate Researcher for an ARC Linkages Project on maths and science, she travels through outback Australia bringing professional learning to country, aboriginal and remote communities. Her ground-breaking early childhood book series about the formation of the solar system, 'From Space to Earth' was published last year and contains Mandarin translation. The accompanying teacher's manual will be published in 2020. Camilla never ceases to explore and continue learning about the world around her, most recently learning how to fly a plane. Camilla lives in rural Sydney Australia but thanks to technology she can consult on Science Baby (& see her grandkids) over zoom.
